In Conclusion

After learning all of this statistics on prisoners, Americans should come together and try to bring about a change. Changing the prison systems would do great things for society, as previously mentioned. Prison reform could lower incarceration rates, change and/or save people’s lives, and lower the crime rate. Just think of how much better of a country this could be. Imagine having a new statistic where America’s incarceration rates are the lowest in the world, instead of what they are now, which is the highest!

  1. The opposite side of this argument is that rehabiliation is a joke, which I've heard in some of my criminal justice classes. I was actually told that America has already started to implement many of the changes you talk about to put rehabilitation as a higher priority as opposed to just doing the time for the crime and being released. Could the rising statistics you found correlate with a change in the way we now almost pamper our prisoners? Some people can't be rehabilitated. Some benefit from being scared straight. If the topic you are blogging about is interesting to you, you should do further research into maximum security prison systems and how the inmates there are treated inhumanely. The things you find are quite startling. How should we treat the people who will never see daylight again?

  2. I actually have done tons of research on the topic. I plan on personally working towards changing this system. I have done volunteer work at at jails where their are "rehabilitation" programs and honestly they are a joke. 1 program for rehabilitation is not enough. I do not know how rehabilitation could be a joke, when it obviously works for some people, thus the reason some people never return to prison. I agree that nothing works for everyone, but if there are many programs that fit individuals needs, then their is a higher chance of it working. I plan on focusing my time on juveniles, which i did not really mention here, since its easier to change your ways the younger you are. And a high % of juvenile criminals end up in prison as adults. And part of my rehabilitation for these juveniles would be a type of scared straight program, where they visit prisons, and get to listen to prisoners stories.I agree that there are many defects with the prison system, no one deserves to be treated inhumanly as many "lifers" are. If your asking me if i believe that "lifers" should go through rehabilitation programs than yes i do. Are you saying that u believe incarceration rates could be higher because prisoners are being pampered? So that they arent really scared to go back? If so, then yes i do believe that could be true, but if they are properly rehabilitated that would not be an issue. Dont get me wrong they should be punished for their crimes, and understand their are consequences for their actions but their should be more to it.
